The Sauber F1 Team is over the moon after having finished second in a very difficult Malaysian Grand Prix withat the wheel of the Sauber C31-Ferrari. Sergio had started ninth and was one of the two drivers of the pack who changed tyres from intermediate to rain tyres after the very first lap. With the rain becoming too heavy, the race was interrupted for 51 minutes after nine laps. Thanks to the team’s strategy, Sergio was third on the grid for the restart. He managed the remainder of the race with a very strong drive, chased winner Fernando Alonso and finally finished second.

Asking Sergio if it has sunken in, that he just had made his first F1 podium finish, he replied:

“I must say it is a bit difficult to accept it, because in Formula One everything happens so quickly. For sure it was a great race and in a way a great feeling.  Meanwhile, of course, I realised that having come second is a great result for us and is a perfect boost for the entire team, which is working very hard. I am happy for everybody in the Sauber F1 Team.”

Beeing asked, what he is expeting, when arriving in Guadalajara, Mexico he replies : “I have no idea. Mexicans are completely out of control.”

Sauber F1 Team completed pre-season testing

The Sauber F1 Team completed pre-season testing with Kamui Kobayashi & Sergio Pérez at the wheels of the Sauber C31-Ferrari at the Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona.

On his final day of pre-season testing Sergio Pérez did 114 laps, including a qualifying simulation. He has recorded the fastest lap overall of the Barcelona test so far on a set of soft compound tyres.

Kamui did a qualifying exercise under slightly different conditions than those of his team mate Sergio Pérez and he was carrying out further set up work under race conditions before an engine problem stopped him. Nevertheless the Sauber F1 Team has drawn a positive conclusion from testing in Barcelona and feels ready and confident for the start of the season in Melbourne.

Kamui Kobayashi comments: “My test programme for today had foreseen several longer breaks for changes to the car but of course not the early end because of the engine. These things happen, but I am still happy with our achievements.  We made progress and of course there is still room for improvement.  I think performance wise we are looking fine. I feel confident, well and fit – and I think we could race tomorrow if we had to.”

Sergio Pérez comments: “I am very happy with how my final test day went. We did an intensive programme with qualifying and race preparation, which was important to do.  The team has made the most out of all the information we have collected and certainly is in good shape. Also personally I feel ready for Melbourne.”

Sauber F1 Team is back with the same drivers as last season. Kamui Kobayashi starts his 3rd year in F1 and Sergio Pérez his 2nd. Replacement driver Esteban Gutiérrez completes this team of young talented drivers.
